I grew up in England, attending school in Gloucester and then reading Classics at Peterhouse, Cambridge University. After working in London for three years, I moved to Belgium in 1993 where I have lived ever since.
I played the piano as a child and also started playing the guitar, but never took it seriously until 2012, thanks to Rocksmith. I've also done a lot of singing, including over 30 amateur shows.
Since 2012 I have been avidly accumulating guitar-related information as well as guitars and related gear, and I decided to create this site to share some of my knowledge, experiences and opinions with anybody who might be interested.
The site has been updated today with new pages on three separate guitars. Firstly, the Great Guitar Build Off 2020 finished a while ago….I just managed to finish my guitar in time to submit it for the competition. Take a look at page three of that build to see what happened!
Next I finished the Phoenix Tele, which had to play second fiddle to the GGBO build for time reasons. It was finally completed and sent to its owner, though, and you can see the latter stages of the build on page two of that build.
Lastly, I started a new guitar, continuing the phoenix theme in a way! It’s a version of a Firebird that’s being built for someone who contacted me after seeing the GGBO videos, and you can see how that’s coming along on page one of the Bird of Flame!
I’m still working hard on the guitar for the Great Guitar Build Off, but I’ve also taken time to add two new pages here – Page 2 of the build description and pictures, and another page with links to the YouTube videos.
Here’s a quick picture showing the neck while I was working on the inlays:
Two new pages have just gone up. The first one is a page with pictures of the finished chess guitar, and the second is the current work in progress which I call the Phoenix Tele. Take a look at the page to see why!
GGBO is the Great Guitar Build Off, a competition started by Ben Crowe of Crimson Guitars and involving a number of other well-known YouTubers (some of them more attractive than others….mentioning no names!). More information is available at https://www.greatguitarbuildoff.com/.
Things have been slow over the last nine months…I moved house and my initial workshop setup in the garage of my new place didn’t work out, so it took me time to get a decent workshop set up in the cellar instead. However, now I’m back up to full speed, and since we’re all on Corona lockdown, plenty of things have been happening!
The Pencil Tele was finished recently, and you can see the final guitar on page three.
I have also started working on a new project – a guitar with a chess theme. You can see a bit of the idea in the picture below, but for more details take a look at page one of that build! More to come soon…
The other two builds that I’ve had in the works for a while are the V bass and the Resin River Guitar. Both of these builds are nearing completion, and I will post pages on them when they are done.
In March 2019, I followed a seven-day guitar building course at Ambler Guitars in Derbyshire. John Ambler has recently started running courses a few times a year, and I was eager to sign up for one of his first courses since I love his guitars.
Although you can already see the finished guitar in the picture above, you can see more photos from the seven days and a description of the course on the following pages: Part 1, Part 2. I suggest that you start with Part 1!
